This is a very legitimate question. The answer is very simple: the initiators of FreeEDEM have worked for years helping
FOSDEM, and have in October 2003, proposed to organize a FOSDEM track about education.
This activity, as proposed by the present FreeEDEM organizers, has not been accepted by the FOSDEM's organizers in terms that were adequate for the Freeedem organizers, who wanted a fast answer, a complete independance for the organisation of the tracks on education, much space and a very open way to organize the activity, and a simple way to deal with sponsorship and any other support.
Hence came the idea and need to organize this FreeEDEM2004, hopefully the first edition of a long serie, thanks to your help and participation.
The ideas of Fosdem and FreeEDEM are very close: putting together users and developpers of free software. FreeEDEM is in a sense more specific, as it deals specifically with the theme of education, while being also rather general, as developper is understood as any person conrtibuting to free software, this being code, documentation, specification, marketing, ... any knowledge developpement. The similarities, that will allow people attending Fosdem and FreeEDEM to go and attend the other activities as well (ULB Solbosch Campus - Fosdem location - and ULB Campus Plaine - FreeEDEM location - are close to each otther), plus the fact that the week beginning 23 February 2004 is a holiday in Belgian public schools have let us decide to go for the same dates.
